D2.1 Use Cases and initial architecture

D2.1 provides the initial proposal for the architecture to unifying carrier and cloud networks. Methods of the architecture design follow 1) state of the art review, 2) definition of use-cases, requirements and focus areas, and 3) identification of key design principles. Published on 28.08.2014.

D2.2 is a sequel to the initial architecture and use-case definitions that have been documented in D2.1. In this deliverable the final architecture for unifying carrier and cloud resources is defined. Published on 15.11.2014.

D4.1 Initial requirements for the SP-DevOps concept, universal node capabilities and proposed tools

D4.1 presents a first sketch of the Service Provider DevOps concept including four major management processes to support the roles of both service and VNF developers as well as the operator in a more agile manner. The sketch is based on lessons learned from a study of management and operational practices in the industry and recent related work with respect to management of SDN and cloud. Finally, the deliverable identifies requirements for realizing SP-DevOps within an environment as outlined by the UNIFY architecture. Published on 28.08.2014. arXiv:1510.02220

M4.1 SP-DevOps concept evolution and initial plans for prototyping

M4.1 updates D4.1 with an evolved sketch of SP-DevOps, including high level specifications of interfaces and a refinement of monitoring function and observability point definitions. This deliverable introduces the SP-DevOps toolkit, a set of DevOps solutions that are developed targeting research challenges specific to a UNIFY production environment as identified in D4.1. Status updates on design and development of individual SP-DevOps tools and capabilities are presented together with an outlook on upcoming prototyping activities. Published on 10.03.2015.

D4.2 Proposal for SP‐DevOps network capabilities and tools

D4.2 provides an updated understanding of how the technically matured SP-DevOps concept can be applied and integrated with the final UNIFY architecture. Specifically, the deliverable contains technical descriptions of a set of novel SP-DevOps tools and support functions that facilitate the observability, troubleshooting, verification, and VNF development processes. The tools and support functions are  described in detail together with their architectural mapping, giving a wider understanding of the SP-DevOps concept as a whole, and how SP-DevOps tools can be used for supporting orchestration and programmability in the UNIFY framework. The concept is further exemplified in a case study for deployment and scaling of an Elastic Firewall. Published on 01.09.2015. arXiv:1510.02818

D4.3 Updated concept and evaluation results for SP-DevOps

D4.3 first presents the final definition and assessment of the SP-DevOps concept, which is realized by a combination of various functional components facilitating integrated service verification, efficient and programmable observability, and automated troubleshooting. Secondly, D4.3 provides the evaluation of the individual SP-DevOps components. Thirdly, D4.3 shows how the SP-DevOps tools and functions jointly can activate automated processes and workflows for verification, observability and troubleshooting in SDN/NFV environments. Finally, concrete use cases are presented in order to showcase selected processes, which lead to prototyped demonstrators allowing a final evaluation of SP-DevOps in close-to-real scenarios. D4.4-pub Public SP-DevOps code base

D4.4-pub is the shortened, public version of D4.4. It contains documentation of the publicly shared SP-DevOps prototype code (DevOpsPro). DevOpsPro is based on multiple compontents that are useful on their own, but together support integrated monitoring and management processes as part of the UNIFY Architecture. For detailed description of the tools we would like to refer to D4.3, whereas this auxiliary document list requirements, provides installation instructions, gives usage examples and howtos, and presents sample results for each tool. D5.1 Universal Node functional specification and use case requirements on data plane

D5.1 gathers the requirements for the Universal Node data plane; introduces the first and high-level approach to the functional specification of the data plane, based on three main modules focused on management, control and execution; and details the specific requirements of a selected use case on the data plane and also defines the expected performance parameters. D5.2 API and Universal Node software architecture

D5.2 establishes the software architecture of the Universal Node and defines its external interfaces. Published on 26.08.2014.

D5.3 Prototype description and implementation plan

D5.3 describes the prototype Universal Node (UN) that is developed within the UNIFY project and provides a corresponding implementation plan. Published on 05.12.2014.

D5.4 Initial Benchmarking Documentation

D5.4 is the first deliverable in a series that would present the results of the Universal Node (UN) performance characterization and development activities. Owing to the early stage of this work, most of the results presented in this deliverable are about getting baseline measurements. Published on 31.01.2015.

D5.5 Universal Node Prototype

The Universal Node is a physical machine (e.g., an high volume standard server, a CPE) that executes several software components: a Universal Node orchestrator, a virtual switching engine, one or more virtual execution environments, and a variable number of Virtual Network Functions executed within the virtual execution environments. The prototype described in this deliverable implements the Universal Node orchestrator and the so called Name Resolver, a simple module defined in WP5 and implementing a simplified version of the Network Function Information Base (NFIB) used for validating the prototype. D6.1 Project Website and Communication Kit

SP-DevOps toolkit

DoubleDecker messaging system

DoubleDecker is a flexible, carrier-grade communication services between virtual monitoring functions and controllers, orchestrators, and network management systems. It is built as hierarchical distributed message system based on ZeroMQ. DoubleDecker currently supports direct notification and Pub/Sub; multiple tenants; authentication and encryption.

RateMon: Rate Monitoring function

RateMon provides precise statistical estimates of link utilization in a distributed manner to offer congestion indications.

Epoxide: Modular Troubleshooting Framework for SDN

Epoxide is an Emacs based modular framework, which can flexibly combine network and software troubleshooting tools in a single platform. Epoxide does not try to be a complex troubleshooting software that fully integrates all available tools, but rather a lightweight framework that allows the ad-hoc creation of tailor-made testing methods from predefined building blocks to test troubleshooting hypotheses.

Verigraph

Verigraph is a Formal verification tool for complex networks containing active NFs. Able to automatically verify NF-FGs and their configuration within a matter of few seconds

AutoTPG: Automatic Test Packet Generation verification tool

AutoTPG is a verification tool that actively probes the FlowMatch part of OpenFlow rules and is particularly useful in case of wildcarded flow descriptors.

TWAMP Data Model

A standardized TWAMP Data model to support cross-vendor and cross-technology programmability of legacy OAM tools.

ESCAPE: Extensible Service ChAin Prototyping Environment

The ESCAPE orchestration prototype is detailed in the paper by A. Csoma et al. entitled "ESCAPE: Extensible Service ChAin Prototyping Environment using Mininet, Click, NETCONF and POX".

XDPD: eXtensible OpenFlow Datapath Daemon

xDPd is a multi-platform, multi OpenFlow version, open-source switch focusing on performance and extensibility. The eXtensible OpenFlow datapath daemon bringing innovation into the fast path is available at github.

Virtualizer

Virtualizer library is a reference implementation of Virtualizer data model in Python. It offers a common interface to various components by realizing the Sl-Or UNIFY reference point according to the Virtualizer YANG model.

Universal Node

The Universal Node is a physical machine (e.g., a high volume standard server, a CPE) that executes several software components: a Universal Node orchestrator, a virtual switching engine, one or more virtual execution environments, and a variable number of Virtual Network Functions executed within the virtual execution environments. It receives a service description through its northbound interface, and executes all the operations needed to make the service working.

CarOs

CarOs is an embedded Linux distribution targeting carrier networks. It is based on the Linux Foundation YOCTO project and its value proposition is easily-created custom firmware images and a common infrastructure for logging. In UNIFY CarOS was extended and is used as the underlying operating system on the ARM platform (BananaPi Router Board) serving as a lightweight, low-cost Universal Node with full support of the UN orchestrator interfaces and data models.

 

Events

In addtion to disseminating UNIFY results through publications, standards contributions and deliverables, UNIFY is actively contributing to the ongoing efforts in the SDN and NFV community to develop a common understanding about the key developments in this area. To this end, UNIFY organizes and technically sponsors workshops, special sessions and panels at major venues thus reaching out to a wider audience of scholars and practitioners alike.

 

Bits-n-Bites session at IETF 96

UNIFY offered technical sponsorship for bit-n-bites session of 96th IETF meeting held on 21 July 2016  in Berlin, Germany. UNIFY showcases multiple proof-of-concept demos at the event.

 

Fourth European Workshop on Software Defined Networks (EWSDN)

UNIFY continued in 2015 with its technical sponsorship of EWSDN, the European Workshop on Software Defined Networks. EWSDN 2015 was held from 30 September to 2 October 2015 in Bilbao, Spain.

Third European Workshop on Software Defined Networks

UNIFY was technical co-sponsor of EWSDN 2014, which was held in Budapest, 1-3 September, 2014.
